Oil Spill In the Gulf of Mexico:
The oil spill in the gulf of Mexico has now become the largest offshore spill in the US history. The whole incident started when the drill released methane gas and it exploded, and caused a fire. A well head was damaged started to release oil into the ocean. It spits out about 20,000 to 40,000 barrels of crude oil each day, and total about tens of millions of gallons spilled to date. All fail safes, well failed, and no one knows how the well blew. The bigger issues are how will this affect the gulf, the ecosystems and how much harm will result from this ?
    Biomes/1.1 Biomes/ 1.2 Ecosystems
The gulf of Mexico is composed of three different terrestrial biomes: desert, tropical rain forests and the grasslands, and a marine biome. This Oil Spill will greatly affect the many diverse ecosystems within the gulf of Mexico. Many marine mammals are breathing in harmful toxic vapors, sea turtles will be greatly affected and at the sea floor clams, muscles, and tube worms. Other things like the marshes and plant life will be affected for some time,by the surface oil and the seepage at the bottom.

After using wikispaces for two projects I find it very convenient and easy to use. It's a great way to put together projects in one location, where you can't lose anything, and you can get different ideas from your peers. Once you play around with the wiki page a bit you learn many different things like how to upload a video or picture. You can even paste links on to the page. Overall I never really found anything wrong with wikispaces so it must be good.

TOPIC 4: Describe how natural phenomena can affect climate: Volcanic Eruptions
1784, seems to be where it all started, Benjamin Franklin made perhaps the first connection between volcanoes and global climate. He observed that during the previous year the summer was unnaturally cold in Europe and the Us; the ground froze early, the first snow stayed on the ground without melting and the winter was much colder than ever. On top of that there was this constant fog that stayed over most of Europe and North America. What Benjamin had watched was in fact the result of volcanic activity, more specifically it was an enormous eruption in the Laki fissure system.

    BC Science 10 Textbook
I like the online work with the Wikispaces. However, the website is very poorly designed. It's hard to work with, often erases work if not saved RIGHT away. I enjoy the change, however a different site might be more suitable. This one has too many kinks that just frustrate me while I'm working hard to get this done on time.
Mr. Kissinger, the due date I talked to you and you told me to try uploading the pictures again after not working the first time. Still no luck.

    what wiki is to me:
I think that the wiki spaces is a differnet and i helpful way to do projects. It's different way but it more better than if i were to present it . I also think doing it over the computer is better becasue you can add in cool designs that can make it more pretty. Many people are already on the computer anyways on facebook and msn or even myspace and this way they can do this project while there on the computer. Also becasue i find this better.

The oil spill is not only affecting aquatic environments but terrestrial ones as well. Oxygen, water, nutrients, light, and soil are some examplesof the things that a affected . 1.1
Firstly abiotic components support the life functions of biotic components such as plants, animals and micro-organisms.. Abiotic components are affected not by the oil actually doing something to it but, by blocking off their routes or ways from getting to the biotic components. Biotic components can be affected in the terms of food. Since many of these aquatic plants and animals rely on the ocean for their main food supply they may begin to die off. Organisms in terrestrial areas may also be affected in the means of evaporation of water from the ocean. This water could fall to the earth in the form of precipitation that can land on plants and animals who might unknowingly ingest the harmful substances, that may lead to sickness or death. Another problem for both biotic and abiotic components in aquatic and terrestrial habitats is that each component has special adaptations that help them survive, but when new things are introduced into their habitats like in this case the oil spill the organisms have to make new adaptations in order to survive.

    1.2
Because of the to the oil spill most of the plants and animals both on land and in water may have alot of big problems in finding food, becasue of the fact that the animals wont be able to find food, thir going to compete for it with eachother and then because of that the species may die out. Both abiotic and biotic components interacting with one another can help run an ecosystem.Plants in water need light to go thrugh a process called photosynthesis which converts solar energy into chemical energy that is usable for the plant. But, becasue of the oil spill the sun cant shine through the thick oil. So the pants on the bottom of the cean will DIE.
    2.2 :
The Carbon cycle is the essential component of cells and life-sustaining chemical reactions. Carbon is cycled through living and decaying organisms, the atmosphere, bodies of water, soil, and rock. It moves between store by 6 processes : photosynthesis, cellular respiration, decomposition, ocean processes, volcanic eruptions, and forest fires. But, due to the oil spill many of these processes can’t be carried out properly or can cause damage to the organism. For example when there is oil in the ocean the plants down beneath can’t receive sunlight which they need to carry out the process of photosynthesis. Another example would be cellular respiration the process in which carbon dioxide is released back into the atmosphere. This process can cause harm to organisms in the means of them breathing them in after they have breathed is out which in this case could be evaporated oil.
    Carbon Cycle
Without the proper use of the carbon cycle the world can change. The amounts of the oil spill will impact the carbon cycling and the Gulf of Mexico.,It will affect regular photosynthesis and cellular decomposition. There will be more carbon entering plant leaves and reacting with oil-covered water in the presence of little sunlight to produce poor energy sugars during photosynthesis. During cellular respiration, less energy will be released within the cells of the affected organisms and made available for unhealthy growth and reproduction. Also, alot of organisms will die during this catastrophic times, rate of decomposition will increase pretty fast. Having decomposers such as fungi and bacteria convert more organic molecules such as cellulose back into carbon dioxide and released into the atmosphere. Also, there will surely be a time where available carbon will decrease due to Carbons turning into rocks and sediments that will take centuries to be able to be used again.
Some of these processes include bioaccumulation, biomagnifications, and bioremediation.
Bioaccumulation- the gradual build-up of chemicals in organisms which in this case could be oil. Chemicals or oil can enter an organism through food intake, skin contact, or respiration. If the intake of chemicals such as oil is too much it can be harmful to the organism. Since there is so much oil in the water and some moving on land both terrestrial and aquatic organisms can be affected.
Biomagnification- the process in which chemicals not only accumulate but become more concentrated at each trophic level. Since the organisms in the lower trophic levels will be affected more then others because they are consuming most of the contaminated food. This leads to keystone species. These are very important species that can affect entire population and the health of an ecosystem. So, if even one of these species dies off the entire ecosystem can suffer. This leads to bioremediation.
Bioremediation- the process in which micro-organisms or plants help clean them up. But if these organisms are being affected by the oil spill then bioremediation cannot take place. Meaning that the oil will remain as it is until, human efforts are made to get rid of it.
    3.2 How Human Influence Ecosystems
Due to the oil spill many habitats will be lost. Since the oil spill is a human accident, the animals and other organisms are the ones to suffer since they themselves cannot do anything about it or clean the mess. Habitat loss results from animals losing their homes from destruction of the ecosystem. Humans use much of the resources of the world and sometimes even over use them for agriculture, industry development, mining, and forestry. This includes land use, and deforestation. These
two :)are major problems the humans put themselves and other organisms in.
Soil Degradation- water and wind erosion removes topsoil from bare land.
Soil Compaction- soil particles are squeezed together from farm vehicles and grazing animals.
3.3 How Introduced Species Affect Ecosystems
The oil spill can also affect native species which are the species that originally or naturally inhabit an area. Due to the spill, many new things may be introduced into the ecosystems of the Gulf in order to clean up the spill, Since they are able to completely change an ecosystem, these new introduced species can put an end to the native species of the area.
Introduced invasive species affects native species. They do this through competition, predation, disease, parasitism, and habitat alteration.
Competition- Organisms compete for food sources and habitats.Predation- introduced species can have a bigger impact on prey than native predators. This is because prey may not have the adaptations to fight against them.
Disease and Parasites- Less dominant species have a chance to harm other species. Immune systems of organism can be severely affected from diseases.Habitat Alteration- Organisms take over other organisms’ habitats. They change structures such as light and oxygen levels, precipitation levels, pollination, soil chemistry, and nutrient cycling.

The Gulf Of Mexico Oil Spill
A brief explanation as to how the oil spill occurred :
An explosion of a yet unknown origin caused the collapse of the drilling rig, breaking the piping that connected the drill to the well, 5000 ft below sea level. After this occurrence happened oil spilled into the open waters of the Gulf of Mexico. The officials were immediately notified of this incident but by the time they reached the waters the damage had been done.
    1.1 -
    The Gulf of is the ninth largest body of water in the world.It is largely surrounded by the North American continent and the island of Cuba.By having the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico it's very dangerous since it will obviously affect abiotic and biotic components such as rain forests,water,rainfall temperatures,hot weather,etc. The said thing is that being a ocean,there's going to be many biotic and abiotic will be affected and some may even die since they're bodies are not used to the oil. {gulf_of_mexico.jpg}
    1.2 -
The languid ecosystems of all the surrounding countries surrounded by the Gulf of Mexico are in deep trouble regarding the oil spill. The oil should be cleaned up as quick as possible because if not then such things as rocks, plan species, beaches, trees, sea creatures, fishes, and etc will have a incredible downfall of their species. There's also a chance that some species might even go to the borderline of extinct and we certainly don't want that to happen! The bio-accumulation could end up spreading out farther and could devastate more species.
    2.1,2.2,2.3-
    Since the occurrence of the oil spill biodegration could be a future problem if this issue involving the oil spill does not get resolved quickly.Many species may not be able to reproduce again from the amount of oil that may have entered their bodies and harmed their bodies and if this happens the species could end up going extinct.Imagine a certain type of shrimp that sells greatly in the fish market and which can only be found in the Gulf of Mexico goes extinct? Now that's something we defiantly do not want happening.Unfortunately not only will the the species in the water be affected but also such things as the carbon cycle,food webs and pyramids.The carbon cycle is cycled through many living and decaying organisms.However ,due to the oil spill it will cause a huge dent in the cycle since it the process of the carbon cycle can't be carried out as properly because of the damage done to the organism.Now on to the next subject of the food webs.The food webs could and probably already have been really affected by the oil spill.If even one species on the web starts diasapearing then the whole web will be affected.Also since there is such a greatly amount of oil in the water and some of which is moving on to the land both terrestrial and aquatic organisms are at risk. {1.gif}
    3.1,3.2,3.3-
The oil spill may end up getting all cleaned up but who knows how long that will take? The impact of this natural phenomena will not only leave some short term but also long term affects on the ocean and the species that live in the ocean. Many species have been very affected by this spill and many have possibly even died. This will also affect the fishermen since they wont be able to fish anywhere near the Gulf of Mexico because of the dangers from the chemicals. The United States is already going through a tough patch with the recession and now add on to the fact that the fishermen wont be able to fish anymore? This is devastating.Things such as photosynthesis will also be affected since the oil will be blocking out the sun. From the oil spill many diseases could end up forming and not only amongst the species in the water but also the diseases could carry on to inland and spread amongst us humans. Also from the pollution caused by this oil spill there will be defiantly be habitat destruction. Its bad enough that the species in the water and also other species such as birds were affected but now they're homes are also affected and in some cases destroyed all together.Species such as foreign species may start to enter the Gulf of Mexico too. What if the smell the oil and think it smells good and decide to enter the water.I know it may sound ridiculous and impossible but then again people probably thought that a spill the size of which happened in the Gulf of Mexico was impossible but it ended up happening.Nothing is impossible.
